Why SAHL.ie Exists

This website was born from one moment in a GP clinic β€” and the realisation that information is power, and too many people don't have either.

The Story

A gentleman came in for a fan. That wasn't the reason.

He was an international protection applicant living in Clare Lodge, Ennis. He worked at night. He needed to sleep during the day. The room was hot. He asked for a fan β€” a €20 piece of plastic that would let him rest.

The hostel said no. Unless a doctor wrote a letter saying he "needed" it.

Another doctor had written that letter a few weeks before. Now they wanted a renewal. As if the room had suddenly become cool. As if his need for sleep had an expiry date.

The patient wasn't the problem. The system was.

That moment made it clear: there are people in Ireland's protection system who are asked to jump through humiliating hoops for basic dignity. Who don't know that a GP letter for a fan is not a legal requirement. Who don't know where to turn when someone says no.

Sahl Health Ed exists to close that gap.

A Note on Privacy

The story that inspired this site is real, but details have been changed to protect the individual's identity. No names, dates, or identifying characteristics are published. This is not about one person. It is about a pattern β€” and a system that makes ordinary needs feel like extraordinary demands.

What We Believe

πŸ“’ Information Is Advocacy

Knowing your rights is the first step to defending them. We believe clear, honest information can be as powerful as any lawyer or politician.

🀝 Dignity Is Non-Negotiable

A fan is not a luxury. A decent night's sleep is not a privilege. Suitable accommodation is not a favour. These are rights, and we will say so loudly.

🌍 Ireland Can Do Better

Ireland has legal obligations under EU law to provide adequate, dignified reception conditions. When the gap between law and reality is this wide, something is broken β€” and silence is complicity.

πŸ’¬ Healthcare Workers Have a Voice

GPs, nurses, and carers see the human cost of bureaucratic cruelty. We believe healthcare professionals have a unique duty β€” and a unique power β€” to advocate for patients beyond the clinic door.
